Case Studies

Compost-heat recovery systems have proven themselves highly efficient in all climates, but particularly at northern latitudes. The following case studies show how compost-heat can be deployed effectively.

Jasper Hill Farm

Vermont, U.S.A.

This award-winning dairy farm in Greensboro, VT maintains 40 Ayrshire dairy cows. A compost heat-recovery system is a core component of the facility, heating farm buildings and maintaining a stable temperature for the on-site biogas digester.

Country Oaks

Michigan, U.S.A.

At this compost production and aquaponics facility, a 5m x 15m compost heat-recovery system uses only 350 watts of electricity to produce 104 cubic meters of finished compost per month and 15mW of heat per hour, maintaining a constant 20°C temperature within an aquaponics greenhouse throughout the cold Michigan winter.

Horse farm

Oslo, Norway

A proposed compost heat-recovery system for this horse farm outside of Oslo would reduce compost production times from eight days to five days, generating an estimated 100 cubic meters of finished compost / day. The heat from this system would heat a 6m x 16m greenhouse throughout the winter.  This project was calculated to pay for itself within ten years, based solely on compost sales.  Additional savings on greenhouse heating could be as high as SEK 576,000 per year.
